So much sincerity went into making this book. Every page is imbued with passion and dedication from everyone involved, from the interviewees to the core of the industry it’s based on. What an honor it is to be able to contribute something that not only celebrates coffee, but also serves as a stepping stone for someone to potentially change their lives with.
There is so much more to come.

“Be the best in the world.” Life lessons from father to son. Mikael took it pretty literally and it gained him the World Barista Champion title, but he applies it in every aspect of his life. He got to where he is with high standards and sincerity, with a mindfulness for his own self and the consideration of others.

How does it feel to carry the weight of a nation’s expectations? The WBC might not be the Olympics, but when your country has a long and heavy history with coffee like Indonesia does, being recognized as the best in the world hits harder. And losing that? It weighs heavier.

My first @dutch_aeropress_championship ๐ซ
As someone who’s not competitive, I surprised myself by signing up for the DAC. (I think all that time spent with Garuda Barista this year is rubbing off on me.)
I’m -so- not a technical brewer and I learned so much by preparing for this. I finally bought an @aeropress and got to work dialing it in. It was my first time ever building a water recipe and I’m glad @apaxlab made it an approachable process. I went into this with the goal of challenging my technical skills and the @aero.press format made it really straightforward to hone in on particular aspects of coffee brewing.
I think the easiest part was actually going up onstage and having a good time vibin’ with @wendeliendrinkscoffee . I prepared for the competition to the best of my ability and I was confident in my execution. There was nothing left to do but have a good time. Even if my coffee wasn’t the judges’ favorite that night, I gave it my best shot and learned so much.

I first wrote a feature on @wendeliendrinkscoffee back in 2021 for @iamnotabarista and got to know her story right in the middle of a big transitional period for her. Four years later, @baristamagazine chose Wendelien for their April + May 2025 cover girl and I was so excited to catch up with her for this feature.
We spent hours in a cozy cafe in Utrecht talking about the Dutch vs international coffee industry and all the amazing things she’s accomplished in the last few years, including building @thehappycoffeenetwork . I loved seeing her light up when she talked about this meaningful community and the joy she finds in facilitating friendships.
I’m super excited for the book she and @roseyourcoffeecompanion are writing! We really need more feminine voices in the niche of coffee books.

Spicy Guava Surprise recipe:
-30g spicy citrus syrup
-130g ice
-100g Giraffe Rwanda Liza Kivu strong cold brew (1:8 ratio, 18hrs)
-60g guava juice
-30g Oatly Haver Cuisine
-1 hawthorn candy garnish
1. Combine ice, cold brew, spicy citrus syrup, and guava juice in a glass
2. Top carefully with the cream cap
3. Garnish with hawthorne candy for a plum and spicy guava flavor combo
And of course, the special syrup recipe ๐ถ๏ธ
Spicy Citrus Syrup
45g lime discards
45g lemongrass
5g chili
100g sugar
10g pink salt
Combine for 12 hours then strain
Feel that kick ๐

I remember meeting @boramum in Milan ‘21 at his first world competition and resonating with his pandemic-era DIY sig bev concept. It was also wild that both he and his brother @garamum were representing Brazil in the same year on two different stages. How many other national champion sibling duos are there?
Two years later, I was delighted to write Boram’s @baristamagazine cover story after he won the championship in ‘23 and get to know his journey with the Dream Team @crosbyandcoffee @yokash @torodeo leading up to the winning moment. It was definitely one of the more epic interview settings I’ve conducted in my life, sitting on some rocks in the shadow of the Parthenon. Now in ‘25, it’s incredible to see how committed he still is to elevating the industry with everything he does today.

In 2021, Curious Typhoon celebrated its 4th (!) anniversary with a brand new Europe chapter!
I mean, itโs still just me, with my laptop, sitting in my apartment, but now I have Hong Kong and Dutch business registration licenses.
Moving to Rotterdam in August 2021 was the start of a whole new adventure and Iโm loving every day of my journey. Iโm also getting more comfortable with introducing myself as a writer, but Iโm still working on all kinds of projects every week.
Iโve finally gotten around to updating my portfolio so scroll through the posts above as I recap what Iโve been up to in the past couple of years.
